A Quiet Beginning

I’ve put off writing for years, at least in public. Not because I didn’t have anything to say.

If anything, I had too much to say. Too many thoughts, too many half-formed ideas that didn’t feel perfect. Too many sentences that sounded brilliant in my head at 2 am and then deeply questionable by the morning, and sometimes with no memory of when the screenshot was taken.

I was scared of the reaction, of being judged, even by strangers.

Scared of putting something into the world that wasn’t perfect, so scared that whatever I made would never, ever compare to the work of people who seemed braver, louder, more talented, more certain, more… well, more everything.

The page includes a drawing of a pen, and notes stating 'Quiet but creative', 'I like photography', and 'Anxious overthinker'. There are comic-like sparkles drawn around. A digital camera displaying a bird flying in the sky, three spools of thread in pink, orange, and beige with a sewing needle, and a purple note explaining that the person is a writer, photographer, and craft lover, describing themselves as quiet, curious, and careful.

And, honestly, I let the incessant negativity in my own mind talk me out of starting anything…for so, so many years.

I felt like I lost my chance to be who I felt like on the inside.

My Story

Everything always feels a bit too loud. My brain never seems to switch off, and just leaves me exhausted, even when I haven’t left the house. The thoughts spiral so much, and it feels like you are entirely alone, like no one else could possibly feel like this.

For a long time, I was wrapped up in those thoughts, I was so fixated on what other people would think that I forgot something quite important, my life is about me. That sounds vain, I know. But I don’t mean it in a “the world revolves around me” kind of way.

I mean it in a “why have I spent so long acting like I’m an extra in my own story?” kind of way.

I’ve spent so much time feeling like a side character. Someone there to support other people, understand other people, avoid upsetting other people, and quietly push everyone else’s story forward.

That’s what The Quiet Creative is about.

It’s about finding myself in the middle of the chaos, the quiet moments, the anxious spirals, the very late-night ideas. It’s during the hobbies I start with full main-character enthusiasm and then abandon when they get slightly difficult. It’s about the thoughts I didn’t realise other people had too.

And yes, I like to ramble. I know that might seem strange for someone quiet, but quiet people are not empty. We’re often full of thoughts, feelings, questions, imaginary conversations, creative ideas, worst-case scenarios, and random life realisations we don’t always know how to say out loud, well, some of those might just be a ‘me’ thing, but we will see.

This website is where I’m going to try.

The Quiet Creative is a space for writing, anxiety, introversion, soft humour, creativity, adulthood, personal growth, messy hobbies, gentle reminders, and the slow process of becoming the person I was probably meant to be before fear got so loud it immobilised my actions. It’s for anyone who has ever felt like they were watching life happen from the side lines, a mere shadow in the lives of others, no matter how much support they are surrounded by. It’s for anyone who has felt too quiet, too sensitive, too anxious, too behind, too much, not enough, or somehow all of those things all at once.

It’s for anyone who wants to connect, but finds the world overwhelming, and it’s for anyone who is learning, maybe later than they thought they should, that being quiet does not mean they don’t have ✨main character energy✨.

Somewhere along the way

Somewhere along the way, I became a bit of a blank slate.

Not because I didn’t have a personality, or dreams and certainly not because I didn’t care.

But because I was so busy trying to be easy, quiet, useful, agreeable, low-maintenance, and impossible to criticise that I forgot to ask myself what I actually wanted. I felt so small.

So, this is me asking.

  • What do I like?

  • What makes me happy?

  • What do I want to create?

  • What kind of life feels like mine?

  • Who am I when I’m not performing calmness, politeness, or “I’m fine”?

So, welcome to The Quiet Creative.

Join me for the chaos, the quiet moments, the late learning, the overthinking, the hobbies, the soft disasters, the honest reflections, and the tiny brave steps towards a life that feels more like mine.

And maybe, somewhere along the way, more like yours too.
